According to Moraes’ decision, the expert report on the health condition of the former minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet must be carried out by Federal Police doctors within 15 days.
In the ruling, Moraes mentions ‘conflicting information’ provided by Heleno and the defense of the retired Army general, who was sentenced to 21 years in prison for an attempted coup.
In a statement given after being arrested, during a physical examination on Wednesday (26), Heleno stated that he had been diagnosed with and living with Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia, since 2018.
On Saturday (29), in a letter sent to Moraes, the defense of the former minister from the Bolsonaro administration gave another version, stating that Heleno underwent tests in 2024 and only in January 2025 was the Alzheimer’s diagnosis confirmed.
According to the minister’s decision, a complete clinical assessment should be carried out, including Heleno’s medical history, laboratory tests for thyroid function and vitamin B12 levels, neurological and neuropsychological exams.
If necessary, imaging tests such as MRI and PET scans should be performed, along with other assessments to verify the retired general’s health status.
Moraes ordered that physicians should especially evaluate the memory and other cognitive functions of the former minister, as well as any possible degree of functional limitation resulting from the diseases identified in Heleno.
Heleno was arrested last Tuesday (25) by the Army and Federal Police, after his sentence ‘became final,’ meaning it was definitive. As a result, he began serving his sentence in a room at the Military Command of the Planalto, in Brasília.
