Tragedy struck Hong Kong as a multi-story building fire in northern Tai Po resulted in 36 deaths, with 279 individuals still unaccounted for. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee confirmed the casualties, including a firefighter amongst the deceased. The cause behind the fire remains under investigation by a special task force comprised of police and fire brigade. The fire broke out at 6:22 AM on a Wednesday, leading to 31 injuries and the first reports of smoke billowing from the building.
