Hottest Year on Record in Arab Region: Impacts and Trends

The Arab region — a vast area encompassing 22 countries in northern Africa and the Middle East — recorded its highest temperatures on record in 2024, as revealed by a recent climate report. The average temperature in 2024 was 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit (1.08 degrees Celsius) higher than the annual average from 1991 to 2020. The warming trend in the region is escalating, accompanied by a rise in climate-related incidents like floods and heatwaves. The World Meteorological Organization published the inaugural State of the Climate in the Arab Region report on December 4, highlighting these concerning findings.
