How long can Bolsonaro stay in closed regime prison? Understand

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was sentenced to 27 years and three months in closed initial regime in the action that investigated a coup plan. The case was concluded on Tuesday (25), with the final judgment, when no further appeals are possible. Despite the length of the sentence, experts interviewed by CNN Brazil state that he may serve between five and seven years in closed regime, depending on the calculation applied. According to the Penal Execution Law, first-time offenders, like Bolsonaro, can progress from prison regime, that is, move from a more severe regime to a lighter one, after serving a minimum fraction of the sentence, which varies according to the type of crime. In crimes without violence or serious threat, the requirement is 16% of the total. For crimes with violence or serious threat, the fraction increases to 25%.
