How to Watch Vertical Soap Operas for Free? Learn All About Microdramas Made for Your Phone

Created in China during the pandemic, vertical soap operas are becoming popular worldwide. According to Media Partners Asia, these productions generated $1.4 billion in 2024, excluding China. It is estimated that by 2030, this figure will reach $9.5 billion. This trend has prompted American giants like Fox and Disney to invest in platforms dedicated to producing and distributing such programs.
In Brazil, TV Globo is launching its first genre soap opera, ‘Tudo por uma segunda chance,’ available on the network’s social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and also on the Globoplay streaming service. The story revolves around the love triangle between Lucas and Paula (Daniel Rangel and Débora Ozório) and the villain Soraia (Jade Picon), featuring poisoning, canceled weddings, hospital comas, and unjust imprisonments.
On December 12, Globoplay will premiere ‘Cinderela e o Segredo do Pobre Milionário,’ starring singer Gustavo Mioto. This is just the beginning, with ten more soap operas planned for 2026, along with the acquisition of international titles and stories focused on unforgettable characters from TV Globo’s previous soap operas.
Vertical soap operas, or microdramas, are designed for mobile consumption, with short episodes usually not exceeding four minutes and always ending with a major cliffhanger. The total duration is also shorter, with a maximum of 70 episodes. While a chapter of a traditional soap opera typically has around 40 pages, the first vertical soap opera produced by TV Globo has only 53 pages.
To watch these vertical soap operas, viewers can use apps like ReelShort, Dramabox, and GoodShort, which offer content originally from China but dubbed in Portuguese, as well as adaptations for the Brazilian market. TV Globo’s original soap operas will be available on the network’s social media platforms. ‘Tudo por uma segunda chance’ will release ten new episodes over five Tuesdays. This phased approach allows the network to gauge viewer trends and consumption patterns.
Yes, watching TV Globo’s soap operas is free of charge. On Globoplay, the first seven episodes will be available for free on the platform’s social media and app. To access the full content, viewers will need to subscribe for R$9.90. Similarly, Chinese apps offer an initial preview of the soap opera for free, but to watch the entire series, users must purchase credits starting at R$4.90.
Although vertical soap operas are designed for mobile viewing, they are not filmed using mobile phones. In Brazil, lightweight yet professional cameras are used for filming. The set design prioritizes the ceiling and floor, which are prominently featured in the 16:9 format. The production crew is smaller compared to traditional TV shows, and the cast is also reduced. ‘Tudo por uma segunda chance’ director Adriano Melo jokingly states that ‘our entire production fits in a van.’
