Paleontologist Dr. Sunil Bajpai visited the Kachchh district in Gujarat in 2005 to study ancient whale fossils. While exploring coal mines, they stumbled upon pieces of a huge creature’s remains. The remains were later identified as belonging to a 49-foot long giant snake that had lived on India’s main land 47 million years ago, a concept previously unknown.
Dr. Sunil Bajpai told the BBC, “Initially, we placed fossils aside for 18 years. We initially thought they were crocodile remains. One day, researcher Debajit Datta and I examined the remains, only to discover they belonged to a snake.” They then began a detailed study of the remains, naming them ‘Vasuki Indicus’.
