Increase in Flu Cases in Indonesia, IPB Lecturer Attributes it to Climate Change

Jakarta – Influenza cases have been found in various regions of Indonesia. This increase is in line with the global trend reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Respiratory health expert from IPB University, Dr. Desdiani, explained that the surge in cases is not only influenced by individual health factors but also by environmental dynamics and climate change. The average air temperature in Indonesia in September 2025 reached 26.91°C, higher than the global climate average of 26.56°C.
‘This temperature anomaly is the seventh highest since 1981 and has the potential to increase susceptibility to respiratory infections,’ she said on IPB’s website on Sunday (11/9/2025).
Moreover, the temperature difference between day and night has been increasing recently. Hourly temperature variability can reach 4-5°C.
‘For example, at 12 noon the temperature can reach 37°C, then one hour later drop to around 32.5°C. And so on. So, every hour the air temperature can change,’ she explained.
