NEW DELHI: The United Nations has designated India as the primary contributor to the unprecedented urban growth worldwide. The World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report, published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, reveals that India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia will account for over half of all new urban dwellers globally. India is anticipated to add more than 50 crore people to city regions by 2050, with over 20 crore new urban residents alone during the same period. This rapid pace of urbanization is reshaping the social and economic fabric of the nation. India’s urban population is expected to climb from 36 percent in 2025 to nearly 50 percent by 2050, representing a drastic shift towards urban living.
