New Delhi: During a bilateral meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the importance of the long-standing friendship between the two nations was emphasized. Jaishankar referred to Thailand as ‘a very important’ maritime neighbor of India. Reflecting on the relationship between India and Thailand, Jaishankar recalled PM Modi’s visit to Bangkok in April 2025 for the BIMSTEC Summit, where the ties were elevated to a strategic partnership. Both sides discussed various areas of cooperation, including political collaboration, trade, technology, and maritime heritage. Thailand also expressed interest in joining BRICS during India’s Chairmanship in 2026.
The meeting aimed to strengthen ties and address mutual interests and challenges. Jaishankar expressed gratitude for Thailand’s acceptance of the invitation to visit India, following discussions at the ASEAN summit. He emphasized the historic and friendly relationship between India and Thailand, highlighting the alignment of India’s Act East policy with Thailand’s Look West policy. The ministers discussed the need for regular exchange of views on pressing issues, including the situation in Myanmar. Thailand sought India’s cooperation in combating transnational cybercrime networks and coordinating efforts to counter cyber scams along their borders.
Thailand and India agreed to collaborate on addressing the growing threat of cyber scams, which have affected both nations. The Thai Minister raised concerns about the increasing severity of cyber scams along Thailand’s borders with neighboring countries. Over 1,000 Indian nationals were reported to have fled to Thailand during a recent crackdown on scam syndicates. Both countries acknowledged the shared threat posed by cyber scams and emphasized the importance of regional and international cooperation in tackling the issue. Thailand invited India to participate in the International Conference on Global Partnerships to Combat Online Scams, scheduled for December 2025 in Bangkok.
The bilateral discussions underscored the commitment to strengthening cooperation in various fields, including technology, trade, and security. Both countries reiterated their support for each other in multilateral frameworks and emphasized the significance of regular exchanges to address emerging challenges. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the enduring friendship between India and Thailand and a shared commitment to enhancing collaboration on regional and global issues.
