Indonesia Accused of Twisting Facts as Former Dictator Suharto Named National Hero

It’s a long-standing tradition in Indonesia that on November 10, Heroes Day is celebrated to honor those who fought for the country’s independence. Each year, a few individuals receive the title of ‘national hero,’ recognizing their contributions to Indonesia’s progress. This year, one of the ten individuals granted this status is former authoritarian leader Suharto, a controversial choice. Despite failed nominations in the past, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who was previously married to Suharto’s daughter, made the decision to honor him. Suharto, who governed Indonesia from 1967 to 1998, is praised by supporters in Central Java for maintaining national stability during his regime.
