Indonesian and Australian leaders revealed on Wednesday that they are nearing the final stages of signing a new bilateral defense treaty. This development was made public during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s inaugural state visit to Australia, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese by his side. Albanese expressed his intention to finalize the treaty during his upcoming visit to Indonesia in January. According to him, ‘The governments of Australia and Indonesia have just successfully concluded negotiations for a new bilateral treaty on our shared security.’ He further elaborated that the treaty will solidify commitments between the two countries to engage in regular security consultations at the leadership and ministerial levels.
