Indonesia Announces End of Polio Outbreak, Long Efforts to Protect Children Finally Pay Off

WHO officially closed Indonesia’s polio status after two years of control efforts and nearly 60 million doses of immunization given. This success strengthens the polio-free status in the region supported by increased immunization and AFP surveillance. The government emphasizes the importance of maintaining immunization coverage to keep Indonesia polio-free. After more than two years of battling to contain the spread of polio type 2, Indonesia finally officially closed the Extraordinary Event (KLB) polio status. The announcement of the closure of the KLB by the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 19, 2025, is a crucial point in the effort to keep Indonesian children protected from the disease that can cause permanent paralysis.
