The death toll from floods and landslides in the Indonesian island of Sumatra has tragically reached 303, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency. This number has risen from the initial count of 174 deceased individuals. Extensive regions in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand have been severely affected by cyclone-induced heavy rainfall for a week, culminating in a rare tropical storm forming in the Malacca Strait.
In addition to the fatalities, there are 279 individuals currently unaccounted for, with approximately 80,000 residents already evacuated and hundreds stranded across three provinces in Sumatra. Suharyanto, the head of the disaster agency, informed the press that efforts are ongoing to reconnect the northern part of Sumatra, severely impacted by the natural disasters, as roads are impassable and communication infrastructure has been destroyed due to landslides.
Helicopters have been utilized to transport aid and manage logistical operations in the most affected areas. There has been a significant focus on reopening the route from North Tapanuli to Sibolga in North Sumatra, which has been cut off for three days. Rescue teams are currently working to clear road blockages caused by landslides and provide essential supplies to individuals stranded along the route. Military assistance will be bolstered on the following day to boost relief operations.
Amid the crisis, there have been reports of individuals attempting to loot supplies in the severely impacted Central Tapanuli area, highlighting the desperation faced by the affected population. Across the Malacca Strait in Thailand, the death toll from the floods in the southern region has risen to 162, as confirmed by government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat. This marks an increase from the previous count of 145 fatalities.
As the situation continues to unfold, efforts are underway to address the immediate needs of those affected by the devastating floods and landslides. The authorities in all the impacted regions are collaborating to provide necessary assistance and support to the affected communities in their time of dire need. The resilience and unity displayed in the face of this catastrophe serve as a testament to the strength and solidarity of the people in these regions during times of crisis.
