Indonesia’s finance ministry announced its plans to introduce a new bill aimed at redenominating the rupiah currency as part of efforts to boost economic efficiency, ensure stability, and enhance the credibility of the currency. According to a ministry regulation reviewed on Saturday (Nov 8), the proposed bill is set to be finalized by 2027. Discussions about removing zeroes from the currency have taken place in previous years, with the government submitting a redenomination draft to Parliament in 2013. The earlier draft suggested eliminating three zeroes from the rupiah banknote but was put on hold. The specifics of how many digits will be removed in the latest redenomination proposal remain unclear.
