Indonesia has initiated a criminal investigation into the source of radioactive contamination leading to recalls of shrimp, spices, and sneakers exported to the US and the Netherlands. The inquiry is centered on a metal-processing plant located at the Cikande Industrial Estate in Banten province on Java island. Authorities believe the smelting company, PT Peter Metal Technology, is Chinese-owned. A spokesperson for the task force leading the investigation confirmed the launch of the criminal probe. Reports of cesium 137 contamination surfaced after Dutch authorities detected radiation traces in shipping containers from Indonesia earlier this year. The initial findings revealed contaminated boxes of sneakers, prompting further scrutiny.
