Indonesia Races Against Time to Evacuate Flood-Stranded Residents as Death Toll Reaches 28

Floods and landslides resulting from torrential rain in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province have led to the deaths of at least 28 individuals by Thursday, severely impeding rescue operations due to a ‘total cut-off’ of roads and communications. In a rare occurrence, a tropical cyclone hit Sumatra, inundating the Malacca Strait and causing widespread flooding and landslides, stated the country’s meteorological agency on Wednesday. Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, reported on Thursday that 10 individuals are still missing. With approximately 8,000 people evacuated across North Sumatra and roads blocked by landslide debris, aid and supplies are currently being airlifted to affected areas. Yuyun Karseno, an official at the disaster mitigation agency’s North Sumatra division, mentioned that Sibolga and Central Tapanuli were severely affected, leading to communication and power disruptions. ‘There is no more access, due to a total cut-off,’ Yuyun stated regarding the ongoing rescue operations. ‘Until now we can’t communicate with folks in Sibolga and Central Tapanuli.’ According to Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, a family in Central Tapanuli was among the casualties. A video shared on social media by radio channel Elshinta depicted an individual carrying a baby in a plastic container on a roof in Central Tapanuli. Footage and images circulated by the agency displayed swift water currents engulfing the region, causing widespread destruction to buildings, while rescuers utilized orange rafts to reach flooded homes. Authorities also reported flooding in West Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The meteorological agency warned of additional flooding in various Sumatran provinces, including Aceh and Riau, within the next two days due to extreme weather conditions. Indonesia’s flooding is part of a string of severe weather events in Southeast Asia this week, with over 30 casualties in Thailand and Malaysia, where floodwaters rose to levels submerging hospitals.
