Indonesia has suspended the operations of three companies in Sumatra as part of an investigation into whether their land-clearing activities contributed to the devastating floods and landslides that claimed the lives of hundreds on the island. The government took action against mining services company PT Agincourt Resources, state-owned plantation firm PT Perkebunan Nusantara III, and hydro power developer PT North Sumatera Hydro Energy, instructing them to conduct an environmental audit. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq announced the decision following an aerial inspection that revealed significant land clearing upstream from their operations, potentially heightening the flood and landslide risks in the area.
