Mount Hayli Gubbi in Ethiopia reportedly erupted last Sunday (11/23). It is known that this mountain has not erupted for 12,000 years. This event caught the attention of researchers, including Dr. Mirzam Abdurrachman, a lecturer in the Petrology, Volcanology, and Geochemistry Division at ITB’s FITB. According to him, there are three classifications of volcanoes: active, dormant, and extinct. However, he emphasizes that these boundaries are not always easily defined. ‘This classification can sometimes be confusing and not easily understood definitively, especially in terms of time boundaries,’ he explained on ITB’s website, quoted on Friday (12/5/2025).
