Improved weather on Saturday assisted rescuers on Indonesia’s Sumatra island in finding more bodies. The recovery efforts faced challenges in reaching areas affected by landslides and flash floods that caused over 300 fatalities and left many missing. Parts of Sumatra were isolated due to damaged roads and communication lines, necessitating the use of transport aircraft for aid delivery. The absence of heavy equipment also hindered rescue operations. Monsoon rains triggered rivers to overflow, leading to devastating consequences in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh provinces.
