Indonesia’s Gig Drivers Threaten to Ignite ‘Ojol Revolution’ as Inequality Deepens

In Indonesia, gig drivers are expressing their dissatisfaction with the way authorities and operators mistreat them. A gig rider stated, ‘We work through rain and sun for our families. We just don’t want to be mistreated by authorities and operators.’ The chairman of a major motorcycle taxi association in the country has issued a warning, promising ‘greater and greater escalation.’ This threat comes as millions of drivers are prepared to initiate what he calls the ‘ojol revolution,’ using ‘ojol’ as slang for motorcycle taxi drivers. The deepening inequality in Indonesia’s gig economy is fueling this potential uprising.
