Indonesia’s Government Must Address Root Cause of Recent Protests

Indonesian citizens are no longer remaining silent. Recent protests and riots, which swept through cities across the nation, marked some of the largest demonstrations since the downfall of Suharto’s 32-year regime. The unrest resulted in ten fatalities, over 3,000 arrests, and widespread destruction of property. However, the catalyst for these events goes beyond mere dissatisfaction with the perks enjoyed by members of parliament.
