In the global agri-food system, a significant disparity exists between where agricultural goods are produced and where the wealth generated from them ends up. A study conducted by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) uncovered a trend over the period of 1995 to 2020, showing that the value added in global agri-food systems was largely absorbed by non-agricultural sectors, predominantly controlled by nations in the Global North.
