Investigation Launched into the Accident Case at PT ASL Shipyard Batam, 43 Individuals Interrogated

The case of the fire on the tanker ship MT Federal II undergoing repairs at PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia, Batu Aji, Batam, Riau Islands (Kepri) has escalated to the investigation phase. Up to now, the police have interrogated 43 witnesses. ‘The process of the ASL case has entered the investigation phase. This is conducted by the Sat Reskrim Polresta Barelang with assistance from the Riau Islands Police,’ said Kapolresta Barelang, Kombes Zaenal Abidin, on Friday (10/31/2025).

Zaenal explained that during this investigative phase, they have obtained statements from 43 witnesses. These witnesses come from various parties, including subcontractor companies and the Manpower Office of the Kepri Province. ‘Some witnesses have been questioned, not only from the ASL Marine Shipyard management, but also from subcontractors, the Labor Office overseeing Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), and other relevant parties,’ he said.

Despite the accident case being under investigation, no suspects have been identified yet. Zaenal stated that they are still awaiting the forensic laboratory results to strengthen the evidence. ‘We are still waiting for the lab results. Once they are available, we will review the case to determine the next steps, including identifying suspects,’ he said.

Previously, the tanker ship MT Federal II undergoing repairs at PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia, Batu Aji, Batam, was reported to have caught fire again on Wednesday (10/15). The incident resulted in 18 injuries and 13 fatalities. This was not the first accident during the repair of the MT Federal II ship. A similar incident occurred in June 2025, resulting in the deaths of four workers.

Following the incident, two individuals, identified as A and F from the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team, have been designated as suspects.
