Iran Seizes Oil Tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, US Official Says

Iran confiscated a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the narrow Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway, on Friday, according to a U.S. official. This marks the first such interdiction in months in the region. Tehran had been issuing warnings of possible retaliation following a 12-day conflict with Israel in June. The vessel, named Talara, was en route from Ajman, United Arab Emirates, to Singapore when Iranian forces intercepted it. A U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone observed the seizure, as confirmed by flight-tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press. Private security firm Ambrey reported that three small boats were involved in the operation. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center also acknowledged the incident, attributing it to potential ‘state activity’ that directed the ship into Iranian waters. Columbia Shipmanagement, the vessel’s operator, lost contact with the tanker carrying high sulfur gasoil, prompting collaboration with relevant authorities to reestablish communication and ensure the crew’s safety. Iran has a history of maritime confrontations, such as the seizure of two Greek tankers in 2022 and the Portuguese-flagged ship MSC Aries in 2024. These actions, combined with other incidents, have significantly impacted shipping activities in the region. Tensions between Iran and the West intensified during a 12-day war following years of disputes, leading to concerns over the stability of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil trade. The U.S. Navy’s presence in the area aims to safeguard maritime activities and prevent disruptions in the strategically important waterway.
