Iran’s Decision to Boycott FIFA World Cup Draw in Protest Over Visa Denials

Iran has chosen to boycott the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington next week following the United States’ denial of visas to members of its delegation. The state-run IRNA news agency reported the decision on Friday, quoting Iranian soccer federation spokesman Amir-Mahdi Alavi. Alavi mentioned that the visa obstacles extended beyond sports considerations. A response from the White House is pending. The federation has engaged with FIFA in hopes of finding a resolution, with no immediate feedback from soccer’s governing body. President Trump’s administration implemented a travel ban in June, affecting citizens of 12 countries, including Iran and Haiti, which recently secured a World Cup spot. The ban included exemptions for athletes and team members traveling for major sporting events, determined by the secretary of state.
