Irish Mother Desperate for Return of Abducted Children After 8 Trips to Egypt

Mandy Kelly has not seen or heard from her young sons since they were snatched by their father while on holiday in Cairo in March 2022. After making eight trips to Egypt in a desperate attempt to find her abducted children, she expressed her frustration with the lack of progress. Zayn, 7, and Kareem, 4, were taken by their father three-and-a-half years ago. Despite Egyptian court orders for their return, the father remains at large, evading arrest for the illegal abduction.

Kelly is urging the Irish Government to prioritize the safe return of her sons as a diplomatic issue between Ireland and Egypt. She seeks the implementation of an Interpol Red Notice against her ex-husband to facilitate his arrest. Despite a presidential commitment to Ireland, Kelly has received no welfare updates or clear plan for her sons’ return. Following a meeting with Tánaiste Simon Harris, she is calling for concrete actions to bring her children back home, emphasizing the need for high-level government intervention.

Expressing her disappointment with the lack of progress, Kelly highlights the urgency of the situation, as her life remains on hold without any contact with her sons. While acknowledging the support from officials and Oireachtas members, she insists on tangible steps to secure her children’s welfare and repatriation. Kelly stresses the importance of prioritizing children’s rights in the diplomatic relationship between Ireland and Egypt, advocating for independent welfare verification and consistent communication to ensure her sons’ safe return.

Despite Ireland’s ongoing cooperation with Egypt in other areas, Kelly emphasizes that her children should not be neglected in diplomatic exchanges. She insists that justice for her sons should not lag behind trade or cultural agreements between the two countries. Determined to continue pursuing legal avenues and engaging with Egyptian authorities, Kelly vows to escalate diplomatic efforts if necessary to secure the return of Zayn and Kareem. Her appeal to the Irish Government is clear: take decisive action to reunite a mother with her abducted children.
