The discussion about the use of cellphones in art environments, such as theaters and cinemas, has reached a boiling point in recent weeks. At the premiere of ‘Fica Comigo Esta Noite’ in Rio de Janeiro, Falabella publicly criticized the use of devices, calling it ‘disrespectful to those who are working.’ Nailton Silva, the technical director of the play, emphasized the visual impact, noting that the audience is in the dark during the show, and a cellphone screen glowing can be distracting. The producer Bob Litig shared an incident where a ballerina lost focus due to a bright flash from a phone and fell off the stage.

Another incident that sparked controversy was actor Mateus Solano’s interaction with a fan in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul. A video showed Solano addressing a fan filming the scene, who claimed she was not informed about the cellphone ban and felt embarrassed when the actor tapped her hand and took the phone. Solano denied the action but used the debate to discuss the ‘lack of public etiquette’ and the boundaries between the audience and performers.

According to professionals, the change in audience behavior reflects contemporary society and the rise of social media. Litig summarized the dilemma as people’s ‘crazy need to show others they were there.’ Aline Pereira, a producer in theater and musicals, observed that cellphone use has become almost automatic during shows, with screens lighting up every few minutes for various reasons. Productions try to address excessive cellphone usage without alienating the audience, usually warning about prohibitions before the show starts.

While there are no federal laws prohibiting cellphone use in these venues, some cities like Salvador, Bahia, have municipal laws against it. Theatres can also set internal rules, generally prohibiting or limiting usage. The challenge remains in finding a balance between modern technology and the traditional live performance experience.
