Israeli authorities are reportedly hindering the travel plans of numerous families of Palestinian prisoners who were deported to Egypt, in a move described by the head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, Abdullah al-Zaghari, as ‘a systematic policy of collective punishment.’ Al-Zaghari emphasized that some of the deported prisoners are dealing with serious health issues and require continuous medical attention and the support of their families. He called on relevant parties to intervene and address the uncertainties surrounding the fate of the deportees, such as the possibility of their resettlement in other countries.
This year, Israel deported 383 prisoners to Egypt as part of a prisoner-hostage exchange agreement with Hamas. The majority of the released prisoners have remained in Egypt ever since. According to al-Zaghari’s press release, the condition stipulated by Israel states that Palestinians found guilty of killing Israelis must face permanent deportation if released as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal and are prohibited from returning to the West Bank. Despite these stringent measures, Israeli authorities have yet to provide a statement regarding the reported ban on families of the deported prisoners.
