Italian Authorities Work to Identify Victims of Lampedusa Boat Tragedy

Italian authorities are working diligently to identify the victims of the tragic incident that took place in Lampedusa, where two overcrowded boats sank in the Mediterranean. A significant development in this process was the presence of a wooden coffin, marked with an “X”, at the local cemetery where the bodies of some victims were kept. Lampedusa, located just 90 miles off the coast of Tunisia, serves as a common entry point for individuals attempting to reach Europe on precarious boats. The island’s reception center currently houses 317 people, including around 70 unaccompanied minors, as noted by Giovanna Stabile from the Italian Red Cross.
