ITS Bikin Paving Porous Ramah Lingkungan: The Solution to Floods in Indonesia

Flooding often haunts Indonesia. To address this problem, ITS has created porous paving. What is it? As known, several areas in Indonesia are experiencing floods due to continuous rainfall. The Head of the DTIS ITS Research Team, Dr. Eng Yuyun Tajunnisa ST MT, explains that floods often occur due to land use changes reducing the soil’s ability to absorb water. ‘Hard surfaces with low permeability commonly used in urban areas cannot effectively drain water, causing rainwater to accumulate on the surface,’ Yuyun stated on the ITS website quoted on Friday (31/10/2025). She explained that conventional paving blocks are one type of surfacing with low absorption capacity that can potentially cause waterlogging. In response to this issue, her team developed porous paving, capable of naturally absorbing water while being environmentally friendly.
