Jakarta’s population of approximately 4.2 billion has surpassed Tokyo, leaving behind the Japanese capital. The list also positions Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with around 3.7 billion residents in second place, while Tokyo falls to third place, and India’s capital, Delhi, ranks fourth. Jakarta’s climb in the ranking is quite surprising as in 2018, according to the UN report, it was in 33rd place with a population of only 1.1 billion, while Tokyo was in first place with 3.7 billion residents. The significant change in Jakarta’s ranking is a result of the new methodology adopted by the United Nations for population measurement.
