Japan and Indonesia have agreed to enhance maritime security cooperation in a 2+2 meeting in Tokyo. Both countries emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing dynamics in the East and South China Seas, promoting defense equipment transfers, increasing official exchanges, and upholding international law. The visit of the Indonesian Minister of Defense to Japanese warships and submarines is part of strengthening strategic relations, aligning with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The agreement was reached during the 2+2 meeting at Iikura Residence, Minato-ku, Tokyo, on Monday (11/17/2025). This 2+2 format meeting is the third in the last four years since 2021, with Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in attendance. From Indonesia, Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin were present.
