Japanese publication Kyodo reports that Japan is at risk of losing pandas in its zoos due to escalated relations with China since the animals in the country are officially owned by China. The tension between the two countries may have been sparked by statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaiti regarding the situation with Taiwan. Currently, Japan only houses pandas in Tokyo Zoo, where two pandas, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, reside. The agreement for their stay in the country is set to expire in February 2026.
