Expectations were for a balanced match between the seventh and eighth-placed teams in the Brazilian Championship, but the historic 6-0 victory for Fluminense over Sao Paulo on Thursday, for the 36th round, surprised not only the tricolor fans at the Maracanã, but also the players themselves. Scoring the fourth goal of the match, forward John Kennedy admitted to being surprised by the game, but praised the team’s growth in the final stretch of the competition.
‘I think Fluminense has been on a very good upward trend, making things easier and playing very well. Today was no different. We faced Sao Paulo slightly below expectations. We didn’t expect such a match, but we set our pace from the beginning and were very successful. In some games we were scoring few goals, but today I think we were both lucky and efficient,’ said the forward.
Kennedy entered the game in the second half and scored at the 24th minute. Amidst Zulbedía’s team’s deadly counterattacks, Canobbio made a beautiful pass to Serna, who carried the ball into the box and passed to John Kennedy. The forward dribbled the defenders with his first touch and took a powerful shot to the goalkeeper’s left corner for the second touch.
The player scored a goal again after almost two months. His last goal was on October 1 in the 2-2 draw with bottom-placed Sport. The other goals were scored by Canobbio (twice), Martinelli, and Serna.
‘It’s important for an attacker to always be scoring goals. I was a bit upset because I had some good games where I didn’t score. So, getting back to scoring today is important, boosts confidence a bit more, and makes us feel lighter on the field. We need to keep working, looking for more goals to further boost confidence and help Fluminense,’ Kennedy added.
With 58 points now, the tricolor team is qualified for the pre-Libertadores, but if they remain in fifth place, they could go directly to the group stage of the continental tournament. Fluminense’s next game will be against Grêmio away on Tuesday.
