Justice in Paraíba ordered the internment of the man who died after entering a lioness enclosure in João Pessoa

Paraíba’s Justice ordered 19-year-old Gerson de Melo Machado, who died on Sunday (30) after invading a lioness enclosure at the Arruda Câmara Park zoo, known as Bica, in João Pessoa, to be interned in a long-term care institution. Og1 had access to a decision dated October 30, by Judge Rodrigo Marques de Silva Lima, and Judge Conceição Marsicano told TV Cabo Branco that she also determined the measure. In the decision obtained by g1, Judge Rodrigo Marques de Silva Lima declared Gerson as unaccountable due to schizophrenia. Due to the severity of his case, the decision stated that outpatient treatment was insufficient, requiring an internment. ‘Outpatient treatment would be insufficient to contain the defendant’s dangerous impulse and to ensure the effectiveness of the initial psychiatric treatment. Admission to a Custody and Treatment Psychiatric Hospital (HCTP) is the most appropriate measure to safeguard public order and, mainly, to provide Gerson de Melo Machado with treatment.’ Judge Conceição Marsicano informed TV Cabo Branco that she also requested specialized monitoring for Gerson. ‘He was referred to the CAPS, because he has a medical certificate, he has a report to that effect. The conditions, what procedure is carried out there, is up to the technical body, which oversees everything and would have the obligation to monitor, not only monitor, I think it would go beyond,’ explained the judge. Janaína D’emery, director of Caps Caminhar, where Gerson was treated, explained that the Caps do not provide housing, but that there are other modalities of care that allow patients to stay on-site during crises.
