Rain-triggered landslides in two areas of Central Java, Indonesia, resulted in the deaths of at least 18 individuals, with authorities confirming the tragic news on Monday. A landslide in Cilacap city consumed a dozen houses in Cibeunying village, making search and rescue efforts challenging due to victims being buried between 3 to 8 meters (10 to 25 feet) deep, as reported by the disaster mitigation agency.
The Cilacap landslide has claimed the lives of 16 individuals, while 7 remain missing, stated M Abdullah, head of the local division of the search and rescue agency. Footage from news channel KompasTV on Monday displayed excavators being utilized to clear the debris in Cilacap. In a separate incident, a landslide in Banjarnegara region last Saturday resulted in two casualties and left 27 individuals missing, with damage extending to approximately 30 houses and farms, as per the disaster mitigation agency’s update.
Indonesia’s wet season began in September and is predicted to continue until April, heightening the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding, warned the weather agency. As the search operations persist in Central Java, the nation remains on high alert to address the aftermath of these tragic events.
