Leila Pereira proposed the creation of a league of clubs without Flamengo as a solution to the impasse involving the Rio de Janeiro club and Libra (Brazilian Football League). In an interview with Esporte Record on Tuesday (30), the Palmeiras president criticized the attitude of Flamengo’s board in blocking the payment of R$ 77 million related to one of the installments of the ‘pay-per-view’ contract for the Brazilian championship. ‘My suggestion would be to create another league and exclude Flamengo. I think Flamengo should play alone. No club is bigger than Brazilian football. Palmeiras doesn’t play alone, Flamengo doesn’t play alone,’ Leila said. The president went further to criticize Flamengo’s directors’ mindset, stating that this attitude does not enhance Brazilian football. ‘Only if they (Flamengo) want to play against the U-20s. So I think it would be nice for us to form a new league, excluding Flamengo, and Flamengo plays with themselves. Let’s see the audience they will have,’ she analyzed.
