Moscow. November 30th. INTERFAX.RU – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kȯstutis Būdrys and Transport Minister Juras Tamin̨skas have reached out to the European Commission to seek assistance in recovering trucks stuck in Belarus, as reported on Sunday by Lithuania’s official National Radio and Television portal (LRT).
It is reported that the appeal includes a request to ‘develop and present a consistent EU action plan to assist European carriers in Belarus, as well as to address the security issue at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border related to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, including contraband drones.’
Specifically, they urge the European Commission to ‘assist in initiating the proposed new sanctions against Belarus put forward by Lithuania.’
In addition, Lithuanian authorities propose to ‘demand at the EU level the full and unconditional release of European carriers and their assets illegally held on the Belarusian side.’
Relations between Belarus and Lithuania escalated in October, with Vilnius deciding to close border checkpoints with Belarus by the end of November amidst increased smuggling of cigarettes into Lithuania, leading to periodic disruptions at Vilnius airport due to smugglers using weather balloons for transport.
