The President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) warned on Thursday (4/9) about the risk of approval in the National Congress of a project granting amnesty to those convicted of the coup acts of January 8, and called on the population to mobilize to monitor and actively participate in politics.
The warning was given during a conversation with activists and residents of Aglomerado da Serra, one of the largest communities in Belo Horizonte, in a meeting that was also attended by the first lady, Janja, and government ministers. The president’s speech comes at a time when the opposition in the National Congress is working to pass an amnesty bill.
Regarding the proposal that could forgive those responsible for the January 8 attack and benefit former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in case of conviction by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Lula stated that the far-right still has influence in Congress. ‘Congress has helped the government, approved almost everything we asked for, but the far-right still has power. This is a battle that must also be fought by the people,’ he said.
The president emphasized that population engagement is essential for the consolidation of democracy and to ensure that public policies actually work. He stressed that criticisms should be made responsibly and focused on the reality of communities, with no room for flattery or misinformation.
‘You have a commitment. Brazil only has one owner, which is the Brazilian people, and the communities have the best representatives, which are you,’ said Lula, advocating for residents of favelas to engage in national debates and become politically active.
The president also criticized the so-called ‘false patriots’ who advocate for external actors’ intervention in the country, referring to expressions of support for President Donald Trump’s attempted interference in Brazil, especially regarding Bolsonaro’s trial in the STF. Despite the criticisms, he did not mention names, such as federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who has been in the United States since March this year and has been working with US authorities for sanctions against Brazil.
Lula reaffirmed the importance of active population participation. ‘If the government deserves criticism, we should criticize. The outskirts need to be politicized, guided on what is right and wrong, and closely follow the decisions of Congress and the federal administration,’ he said.
