Lula will not nominate Pacheco to the STF, and senator signals exit from public life

Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) informed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that he will not continue his career in public life. They met at the Planalto Palace last Monday (17) and the President informed the senator that he had chosen not to nominate him for the position of Supreme Court minister. Pacheco was a contender for the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso. Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP) was one of the advocates for Pacheco’s nomination to the position. Lula’s decision indicates that the chosen nominee will be the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias. The senator from Minas Gerais was also Lula’s favorite to run for Governor of Minas Gerais with support from the PT in 2026. Pacheco’s statement to CNN Brasil after the meeting with the President indicates that he will also give up his political career.
