Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Banda Sea

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Banda Sea near Indonesia’s Maluku Islands on Tuesday, as reported by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 137 kilometers (85 miles). Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the tremor and assured there was no risk of a tsunami.
The recent seismic activity took place less than two weeks after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake impacted Papua province. Indonesia, located within the seismically active Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ frequently faces earthquakes due to its intricate tectonic setup.
The Banda Sea region, specifically, sits at the convergence of various tectonic plates, including the Australian and Sunda plates. This interaction has fragmented the Earth’s crust into smaller plates and microplates — like the Banda Sea, Timor, Molucca Sea, and Bird’s Head plates — creating one of the planet’s most complex geological settings.
Here, the oceanic lithosphere descends to depths exceeding 600 kilometers, establishing the Banda Sea as one of the globe’s most earthquake-prone regions.
