Malaysia and Ethiopia have signed four memoranda of understanding, signaling a new phase in their bilateral relations and cooperation. The MoUs cover collaboration in air services, health, and tourism. Additionally, a cooperation agreement was signed between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Addis Ababa City Administration. The exchange of agreements took place in the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali during Anwar’s official visit to Ethiopia.
During a joint press conference, Anwar expressed Malaysia’s interest in exploring new markets, particularly Africa and Latin America, to strengthen its position as a trading nation. He emphasized the importance of enhancing trade and investment relations with Ethiopia, a country with which Malaysia already maintains strong ties. Anwar highlighted the need for diplomatic efforts to translate into tangible economic benefits, such as increased trade and investments.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali described Anwar’s visit as the beginning of a new phase in South-South cooperation, built on principles of shared economy, inclusivity, solidarity, and human dignity. He emphasized the role of both countries as a bridge between Asia and Africa, promoting cooperation for mutual prosperity. Abiy Ahmad expressed satisfaction with the productive and forward-looking discussions with Anwar, outlining Ethiopia’s interest in deepening collaboration with Malaysia, particularly in areas like investment, banking, finance, and youth skills development.
In addition, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa highlighted the opportunities arising from the cooperation between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Addis Ababa City Administration. This partnership opens avenues for Kuala Lumpur to expand its global connections, learn from development approaches in East Africa, and enhance its technical capabilities. The cooperation framework focuses on key areas such as waste management, tourism, institutional capacity building, public park management, and climate resilience, reflecting a joint commitment to sustainable urban development.
