More than 90 million Brazilians – 51% of the population – live in some type of conjugal union, according to preliminary data from the 2022 Census released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Wednesday (5). In 2010, there were 81 million, about 50% of the population. The rest consists of 85.7 million people not in a union (49%) – in 2010, there were 80.9 million (50%). Among them, 53 million never lived with a spouse or partner (30%) – in 2010, there were 57.2 million (35%). 32.6 million are separated, widowed, or divorced (19%) – in 2010, there were 23.6 million (15%). The term ‘spouse’ is used by the IBGE to identify the person in a union with another – whether in a civil marriage, religious marriage, or common-law marriage, and also independently of formalization, but with joint residence.
