Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially signed an investment-protection agreement with the United Arab Emirates during his visit to Abu Dhabi. The agreement marks the beginning of talks for a comprehensive trade deal, with the goal of establishing a strong economic partnership agreement. Alongside UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Carney is focusing on creating a framework for future collaborations.
This important visit follows a recent collaboration agreement between the two countries, focusing on enhancing cooperation in artificial intelligence and data centers. Janice Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, highlighted the UAE’s growing prominence in the field of AI and its potential to support Canada through investments and innovative ventures.
During his visit, Carney also took the opportunity to explore the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, praising its architectural beauty that serves as a testament to the exchange of knowledge and materials from around the globe. Despite the positive aspects of the visit, there is no plan for a news conference, with attention drawn to mounting accusations against the UAE for allegedly fueling ethnic violence in Sudan, a claim that Abu Dhabi vehemently denies.
As of the initial report release on Nov. 20, 2025, Carney’s visit to the UAE signifies a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties and exploring mutual economic opportunities between the two nations.
