Mark Carney Strengthens Economic Ties with UAE in Abu Dhabi

During his visit to Abu Dhabi, Prime Minister Mark Carney signed an investment-protection agreement with the United Arab Emirates. This agreement marks the beginning of discussions for a full trade deal, with the goal of establishing a comprehensive economic partnership agreement. The UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan joined Carney in launching these talks, highlighting the commitment to stronger economic ties between the two countries.

The signing of this agreement comes on the heels of a recent collaboration pact between Canada and the UAE focused on artificial intelligence and data centers. Janice Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, praised the UAE’s advancements in AI and innovation, expressing optimism about the potential benefits for Canada from increased investment and knowledge sharing.

During his visit, Carney took a tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, hailing it as a magnificent display of global materials and expertise. Despite concerns and allegations surrounding UAE’s involvement in ethnic violence in Sudan, Abu Dhabi denies these claims. Carney’s visit, however, does not include a news conference, maintaining focus on strengthening economic and technological collaborations between the two nations.

The visit underscores the growing partnership between Canada and the UAE, with a clear focus on mutual beneficial investments and innovations. By fostering stronger economic ties and embracing technological advancements, both countries aim to solidify their positions as leaders in AI and innovation on the global stage.
