Maya Alcaide, who is only 16 years old, is already showing great potential in international Parabadminton. With a physical disability due to overcoming nine operations for spina bifida, Alcaide won the bronze medal at the Indonesia Parabadminton International held in Surakarta. She secured the medal by reaching the semifinals of the tournament.
Representing the Inclusive Badminton Sports Technology Center of Castilla-La Mancha, Alcaide faced Chinese player Xu Tingting in the semifinals on Saturday. Xu Tingting is a prominent figure in the category globally. Alcaide lost the match 8-21, 11-21, showing fierce competition and focus. This result strengthens Spain’s strong presence in Parabadminton following the historic European Championship in Istanbul.
Alcaide discovered Parabadminton as a way to rebuild her life after being confined to a wheelchair following her ninth operation. It was during her time at the National Hospital for Paraplegics in Toledo where she found Paralympic badminton, establishing herself as a rising star in the sport.
