Measles Doctor Declares RSV More Dangerous than Flu and Coronavirus

Television presenter and physician Alexander Myasnikov stated that the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains one of the most dangerous infections affecting the respiratory system. According to the specialist, this pathogen is often the cause of bronchiolitis and ranks among the top three leading factors that lead to hospitalization for pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract diseases. RSV is less common than the flu and coronavirus, but its course is considerably more severe. The disease often complicates with lung damage and respiratory failure, leading patients to intensive care units. The mortality rate for severe infections can reach 7-10%. Infections are mainly transmitted through airborne droplets, and the virus’s danger is heightened by its ability to survive on various surfaces for several hours, remaining infectious even outside of the human body. Myasnikov emphasized that children, elderly individuals, and patients with weakened immune systems are among the most vulnerable to RSV. Infections in these groups often lead to serious complications, including pneumonia. The doctor reminded everyone that the main preventive measures are simple and accessible to all: regular handwashing, wearing protective masks, and avoiding contact with infected individuals. These rules are especially crucial during the peak season for respiratory infections when the risk of transmission significantly increases.
