Megaoperation in Penha and Alemão: 99 dead identified, 78 with criminal records and 40 from other states

Among the 117 suspects killed by Rio police in the megaoperation on Tuesday in the Penha and Alemão complexes, 99 have been identified, according to Rio Civil Police Secretary Felipe Curi. Among them, 40 are from other states. There are 13 from Pará, seven from Amazonas, six from Bahia, four from Goiás, four from Ceará, three from Espírito Santo, one from Mato Grosso, and one from Paraíba. Curi mentioned that 42 of the deceased had outstanding arrest warrants, and 78 had criminal records for serious offenses such as murder, drug trafficking, organized crime, and robberies, among others.
The police operation also led to the arrest of 113 individuals, including 33 from other states and 10 teenagers. Fifty-four of them had criminal records. All of the arrested had preventive detention decreed at the custody hearing. Curi highlighted that nearly one-third of the arrested individuals were from outside Rio, reinforcing the impact of organized crime and territorial disputes.
Curi stated that the Penha and Alemão favelas had become training bases for handling firearms, playing a central role in recruiting criminals from outside the state. These outsiders are ‘trained’ in Rio and then return to their home states to implement the CV’s culture in those areas. The Secretary emphasized the importance of national mobilization in combating these organizations, which he described as narcoterrorists.
Regarding the possible leak of the operation, Curi denied it and explained that the increased police movement in the area drew attention from criminals. He also mentioned the challenging scenario that the police faced, describing it as irregular and asymmetrical warfare. Curi reassured that capturing criminal leaders like ‘Doca’ is a matter of time, despite narrowly missing the opportunity during the operation.
Curi’s remarks shed light on the increased national reach of criminal organizations like the Comando Vermelho. The operation uncovered the extent of criminal activities across state borders, highlighting the need for a unified effort in combating these narcoterrorist entities.
