Mexico criticized Peru’s decision to sever diplomatic relations after granting asylum to former Peruvian Chief of Staff, Betssy Chávez, accused of being involved in a coup attempt. The Mexican government considers Peru’s decision excessive and disproportionate, stating that the asylum is in accordance with international law and does not constitute interference in Peru’s internal affairs. The Mexican government rejected Peru’s decision to sever diplomatic relations on Monday after granting asylum to former Peruvian Chief of Staff, Betsy Chávez, who is being prosecuted for her role in a failed coup attempt in the South American country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. Peru severs diplomatic relations with Mexico for granting asylum to former Castillo premier “Mexico rejects Peru’s unilateral decision, deeming it excessive and disproportionate to a legitimate act by Mexico in accordance with international law, which in no way constitutes interference in Peru’s internal affairs,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release. Chavez is accused by Peruvian authorities of being a ‘co-author’ in the attempted dissolution of Congress carried out in December 2022 by then-president Pedro Castillo.
