The total lunar eclipse set to take place on the night of September 7 and lasting into the early hours of September 8 will reach its peak at 11:41 p.m. on Sunday, as revealed by Atul Bhat, an assistant professor of physics at Poorna Prajna College in Udupi.
Bhat mentioned, ‘Observers can expect to witness the moon turning a striking copper red color during this astronomical event.’ This natural phenomenon occurs when Earth lines up directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface, causing the moon to appear red due to the scattering of sunlight in Earth’s atmosphere.
‘This total lunar eclipse is particularly special because it falls on a lunar day,’ Bhat added. This event provides a unique viewing opportunity for skywatchers, offering a rare spectacle of the moon taking on different hues as it passes through Earth’s shadow.
According to astronomical predictions, the eclipse will be visible in its entirety across several regions in India, including Udupi. Those interested in observing the eclipse are encouraged to find a suitable vantage point with minimal light pollution for the best viewing experience.
Bhat highlighted the significance of this celestial event, stating, ‘Total lunar eclipses are awe-inspiring displays of the intricate dance between the sun, Earth, and moon in our solar system. They serve as powerful reminders of the beauty and complexity of our universe.’ Observers are advised to mark their calendars for Sunday night to catch a glimpse of the moon’s captivating transformation during the eclipse.
